ROUNDDOWN Function in Excel
Beginner
Rounds a number down, toward zero.
Syntax
=ROUNDDOWN(number, num_digits)Example
Use Case
Calculate billable hours (don't charge for partial time).
Common Errors to Avoid
- Always rounds toward zero, even for negative numbers
- ROUNDDOWN(-2.7, 0) = -2 (not -3)
- Doesn't truncate - still respects num_digits parameter
Pro Tips
Use for conservative estimates or when you can't exceed a value. ROUNDDOWN(A1,0) removes all decimals. Different from FLOOR - ROUNDDOWN toward zero, FLOOR toward negative infinity. For precise truncation, use TRUNC instead.
